All of Anthony B's recent hits compiled on a French (On The Corner/Nocturne) CD, featuring productions by: Steely & Clevie, Lloyd James, Bobby Digital, Bobby Konders, Linval Thompson, Sugar Roy, Sheldon Stewart and Anthony B himself. REVIEW IN ENGLISH: SOURCE: ROOTS Music Store AUTHOR: Teacha Dan Anthony B is one of the hardest working artists on the reggae scene, always riding riddims with wise lyrics and often being the most impressive of the bunch. He does not, like some of his contemporaries, surprise us with releases when we least expect them. In fact Anthony B did not even release a studio album in 2002, his latest being That's Life (VP/KB Music) which was released in the summer of 2001. The French live album and DVD Live On The Battlefield (Jahmin'/Next) that were released in 2002 gave us more proof of this artists unrelenting inspiration. Street Knowledge (On The Corner/Nocturne) is also released and compiled by a French label. It consists mainly of hit 45's that have not been out on CD yet and it kicks of with his megahit combination with Culture 'Two 77 Clash', a Steely and Clevie reworking of Culture's original which was part of their project Old To The New - A Tribute To Joe Gibbs Classics. In similar fashion is the last song on the album, a reworking of the classic 'Pass The Kutchie', and yes, together with the Mighty Diamonds. This set again utilizes mailnly roots riddims as we've come to expect of Anthony B. Riddims like Keith and Tex' Tonight ('Police'), the Three Tops' 'It's Raining' ('God Above Everything'), Michael Prophet's 'Gun Man' ('Fire Starter' included as 'First Start' on the tracklisting), Dennis Brown's 'Money In My Pocket' ('Ghettoman Do That'), Studio One's instrumental 'Real Rock' ('Break Free' in combination with Doniki) will tune you in for some really nice vibes. Also included are roots riddims like the Techniques' 'In The Mood For Love', the Heptones' 'I'm In In The Mood', Tempo, African Beat and Queen Of The Minstrels. Street Knowledge also holds some surprises for the real reggae listeners who might already have heard all of the tunes mentioned above in a dance or on their own decks. There is the jazzy 'Dancing Mood', the excellent roots love tune 'Wine And Roses' and the lament annex anti-gun song 'Gun Powder'. All in all this is yet again a very strong release for the minister of the poor and poverty, the honourable Anthony B. (Teacha Dan) |
