Ce'Cile released her debut album Bad Gyal in the summer of 2007 exclusively
for the Japanese market on the Avex Trax label. Only available as downloads or
through very expensive import channels it did not reach a big audience. Now, the
album has been taken up by the German Kingstone label. They redid the artwork and
changed the track listing so extensively that from the original fifteen tracks
only six remain. It became such a different album altogether that Kingstone
released it as Badgyal, without the space.
Kingstone did a very good job in changing the original pretty good but straight up
dancehall album into this excellent set. It has become a more balanced album,
straying away from just hardcore beats to a very enjoyable mix of one drops,
R&B flavours, rock and roll and some of the best dancehall riddims available.
A flaw most dancehall albums suffer from is that the riddims used are often
rendered out of date before the album is even released. Yet, the oldest riddims on
Badgyal are two fine classic 2004 riddims: 'Señorita' and 'Red
Alert'.
Hot as ever, sultry, hoarse, teasing, true, sexy and occasionally downright
obscene, Ce'Cile and Badgyal are sometimes hilarious and always fun. Love
and sex are omnipresent and the overall theme must be pleasure. The lyrics will
make the grumpiest bastard smile from ear to ear, just before he starts swaying to
the music. Ce'Cile is every man's dream and she does not hide it, she really
doesn't hide anything! Mrs Charlton will have you spellbound from the first
second, and then she seduces you and takes you for a ride that lasts more than an
hour.
The production level is very high, the basses pound and all the sounds seem alive.
This is no exception for Kingstone who always maintain a very high production
standard. The order of the tunes leaves enough space for an occasional breather
and keeps the whole experience very exiting. The booklet contains some lyrics and
some more Ce'Cile pictures. The totally restructured version of 'Waiting'
featuring Shaggy is a total bonus and the chilly dub sounds of the (hidden) bonus
track seem to be the only possible way to say goodbye to Ce'Cile.
