Those Dutch reggae fans who have been following Poor Man Friend these last few
years might already know her. Or maybe you have seen her on stage during one of
PMF's many concerts. She lit up many a party as singer/deejay on the Black Star
Sound, including the Made In Jamaica concert in the Heineken Music Hall. If you're
familiar with the Surinam Hindu scene in Holland you might even already know her
as Rishma and if none of the above apply consider this your introduction.
Lady K-Wida has been singing since she was fifteen. From Surinam descent she made
a name for herself in that particular scene before hooking up with Poor Man Friend
in 2000. When PMF were approached by the Black Star Foundation to provide backing
for artists they were promoting, the band brought along Lady K-Wida. There was a
click, K-Wida was recorded and she appeared on albums such as Made In
Jamaica (2007) on which 'So Much Trouble' could be heard for the first time
and in combination with Osagyefo on his debut album Blaze Fire (Black Star
Foundation 2007).
And now K-Wida's killer debut two-track single has been released on Black Star
Foundation's record label. The disc includes the previously released 'So Much
Trouble' (see above) on which Lady K-Wida rides the same Black Star riddim as
Osagyefo's 'Slave Master'. The title track is 'Love Can Make You Blind', a
delicious radio friendly tune with an Indian touch. With excellent vocals, some
fine tablas, Bollywood hooks, freaky breaks and a strong melody the tune has
enough power to become an instant classic. The tune is a virtual showcase of
K-Wida's vocal talents and she pulls it off, from deejaying to singing and even
providing her own backing vocals. The very danceable single is available in
Holland from Free Record Shop or can be downloaded from
Zazell.nl. Run come and support this Dutch top notch artist!
The only minor flaw to the production is the single's sleeve. It looks somewhat
smudgy with dull colours and the photo of K-Wida is not flattering. Such a
beautiful lady could be marketed so much better with a little glamour. Although
music should be left to speak for itself, in today's image is everything climate
all debuts should use any force necessary. Let's just hope the massive will pick
up this tune anyway and make it spread like wildfire!
