After Heads High (1998) and Damn Right (2001, both on
Greensleeves) and a 45rpm collection Reggae Max for Jet Star, Mr Vegas
has now teamed up with US (hip hop) label Delicious Vinyl to bring us
Pull Up.
His move to Delicious Vinyl has proven a wise decision since two of the
featured songs are already conciderable chart successes. 'Pull Up' on the
Coolie Dance riddim was MTV's Jam of the Week and his latest single and
video 'Tamale' is also spreading like wildfire. Utilizing more Jamaican hit
riddims like Red Alert, Famine, The Buzz, Clappas, Dancehall Rock and even
the Surprise (The Bug clone) riddim, this album is the real dancehall ting!
Firery hot female artist Ce'Cile's debut album will also be released on
Delicious Vinyl in the near future and so she too seems ready to storm the
international charts.
On Pull Up Mr Vegas seems to have become more worldly than on his
previous outings. He no longer plays your typical Jamaican ostrich and on
one of his songs, 'Bad Man', he even sings "If you nuh use condom you will
catch disease". A very unjamaican thing to proclaim since venereal deseases
are, in the minds of most uneducated Jamaicans, only for homosexuals.
Guest appearances by Wayne Anthony, Foxy Brown, Irish Man, Alozade, Hollow
Point, Sasha, Pitbull, and Lil Jon add to the flavour and international
appeal of the album. The Barrington Levy cover 'Under Mi Sensi' is done over
an up-tempo riddim (Clappas) which makes it very danceable and on the next
tune, the sweet r&b flavoured lovers rock tune 'Sweat' the man himself
pitches in to help out Vegas and Sasha with some power vocals.
The mix of the album is heavy on the drum and bass just as any
reggae and/or dancehall product should sound. So an extra
very heavy big-up to the sound engineer and the producers. Many
strictly reggae labels can learn from this one.
Though dancehall, hip hop and r&b seem to have never been closer before it
is the Jamaican dancehall productions that constantly seem to surprise the
uninitiated music listener. After Sean Paul's chart busts the world just
seems to be ready for more and Mr Vegas is here to deliver.
