Besides being home to chocolate, cheese fondue, clocks and Lee Scratch Perry,
Switzerland has a new export product to boast about: Addis Record.
This label released some crucial 7inches during the late nineties and has now
released what could possibly become one of the albums of the year. The
project in question is called: Restless Mashaits, and is
made up of reggae veterans such as: Dean Frazer, Nambo, Chico, Dwight
Pickney, Bongo Herman, Dizzy Moore, Deadly Headley and Scully. When
looking at this list of heavyweights it becomes clear that this
recording is heavy on the horns and deeply rooted in the Jamaican reggae
tradition of the 1970's.
The tracks on this album balance between instrumentals and dub, all mixed by
Colin "Bulby" York or Soljie Hamilton. This is not just some reggae
album, this is a roots- steppers- floor killer ready to mash up the
dance!
Every lover of uncut foundation reggae, which was meant to skank to all night
long, should purchase this album blindly. Whether it is the fabulous
opening track 'Africa', or the last Nyabinghi flavoured 'Faya Dub'
it is all strictly killer, no filler.
Our Swiss friends have struck gold with this production and let's hope
that Addis Records will continue putting out quality sounds like these.
They have my vote for album of the year!
